Madurai is the cultural capital of the state of Tamilnadu. It is a spiritual city full of beautiful temples.it is located on the banks of the Vaigai River. It is described as the “city that never sleeps”. It is a city closely associated with history. The city also has many historical monuments. The Koodal Azhagar temple, the Meenakshi temple, the Tirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, Aayiram Kal Mandapam, Gandhi memorial museum are important. Madurai is also an important industrial, educational and commercial centre. The city is built around the koodal Azhagar (Alagar) temple and the Meenakshi temple. The Meenakshi Amman temple is located on the south side of the Vaigai River. It is also a historical temple that is one of the main landmarks of the city. It is dedicated to Parvathi, also known as Meenakshi, and her consort Shivasundareshwar. It is estimated that there are about 33,000 sculptures in the temple. Jallikattu (bull taming) is the most famous historical sport, held as part of the harvest festival (Pongal). Jigarthanda is a must-try cold drink in Madurai. (Milk, badam gum, ice cream, sugar…)

The Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareswaran Temple is a historic Hindu temple located on the southern bank of the Vaigai River in the temple city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, and India. It is dedicated to Meenakshi Amman, a form of Parvathi, her consort, Sundareswaran, a form of Shiva, and her brother Alagar, a form of Vishnu. The temple is located in the middle of the ancient temple city of Madurai. The western gopuram (tower) of the temple is a model of the Tamil Nadu state emblem. "Thirukalyanam" is one of the famous 10-day festivals of the Meenakshi Temple. It is quite an architectural marvel with 14 temple gopurams in pyramid shape ranging in height from 45-50 meters. The gopurams are adorned with vibrant sculptures of thousands of deities, mythological figures and living beings, displaying the exquisite Dravidian architecture. The four main Gopurams serve as primary entry points. The eastern gopuram is the main entrance. Another major feature is a 1000-pillar hall with beautifully carved pillars. There are musical pillars that produce sounds of different scales.

This Aayiram Kal Mandapam located in the worship area of Meenakshi Amman temple, this hall has been a wonderland of wonder and architectural splendour for generations. Carved from a single rock, the hall has 1000 pillars, which are perfect example of art and craftsmanship, with depictions of gods and goddesses. The musical pillars located on the western side of the hall are an experience that cannot be seen anywhere else. When you touch these pillars, they emit melodious sounds that captivate everyone. The engineering prowess of Tamil civilization will amaze us all.

Rameswaram is a municipality in the Ramanathapuram district of Tamilnadu, India. It is located on Pamban Island, a small island off the Indian mainland. It is about 40 kilometres (25 mi) from Mannar Island in Srilanka. It is located in the Gulf of Mannar at the tip of the Indian subcontinent. Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, is connected to the Indian mainland by the famous Pamban bridge. Rameswaram is considered as one of the holiest places for Hindus in India, along with Varanasi, and is part of the char dham pilgrimage. Rameswaram is significant for many Hindus as a pilgrimage to Varanasi is considered to be incomplete without a pilgrimage to Rameswaram. The Ramayana describes how lord Rama built a bridge across the sea from this town to save his wife Sita from Ravana, who had abducted her. The temple in the centre of the town is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Rameswaram is the second closest point from which to reach Srilanka from India. Fishing and tourism are the livelihood of most of the people. Rameswaram Island is also a place that is always in the news due to incidents such as Srilankan Tamil refugees and the arrest of fishermen crossing the border by the Srilankan army. This island is spread out in the shape of a conch. Due to the presence of the ocean, 74% of the area is sandy soil. There are many islands around. The Pak strait is located in the northwest and the Gulf of Mannar is located in the southeast. The Ramanathaswamy temple is the main attraction of Rameswaram. There are no waves on the Rameswaram beach, the seabed rises only up to a maximum of (0.10 feet) and looks like a river. "Ram Sethu" is a chain of limestone rocks between Rameswaram and Mannar Island. It is 29 kilometres (18 miles) long. In the Ramayana, the bridge of Rama is called "Ram Sethu" and in the puranas it is mentioned that it was built by Rama's army of monkeys (vanaras).

The rail bridge connecting the town of Rameswaram on Pamban Island with the Indian mainland was built in 1914. The 2.06 km (1.28 mi) long bridge is challenging to maintain and is located in a very fragile marine environment. It is also a cyclone-prone area. It is supported by 143 piers. It was the first and longest sea bridge in India until the opening of the Bandra-Worli sea link in 2010. The middle section of the rail bridge can be raised on either side to allow ships and barges to pass. During a cyclone in 1964, a Pamban-Dhanushkodi passenger train traveling over the bridge fell into the sea, killing about 115 passengers. The bridge was severely damaged in the 1964 cyclone and required extensive repairs. In 2013, a naval barge hit the bridge, damaging it. This rail link bridge connected the town of Rameswaram to the Indian mainland until a road bridge was built parallel to the rail bridge in 1988. Due to the damage to the existing bridge, construction of a new bridge began in 2020. The new bridge is expected to be completed by 2024. The construction stands as a fine example of India’s engineering prowess.

The Abdul Kalam national memorial is a memorial built in memory of Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the former president of India, scientist and also known as the missile man of India. It is located in the city of Rameswaram, which was gifted to the country as per his wish to rest in the soil of his birthplace, Rameswaram. The memorial is spread over an area of 2.11 acres. The construction of this memorial was completed using materials collected from different parts of India. (The main gate is from Thanjavur, stone slabs from Agra and Jaisalmer, stone pillars from Bangalore, and marble from Karnataka). The memorial is built in a way that showcases a blend of Mughal Indian architecture, India’s culture, heritage, and ethnic diversity. His tomb is located in a circular shape at the northern end of the memorial. The memorial contains around 900 paintings, rockets, missiles, his involvement in DRDO, space, missile development, his teachings as a scientist and president. It also contains his paintings and sculptures from different periods. When we visit this memorial, the memories of that great man and his contributions in various fields will come rushing to our minds.

Dhanushkodi is an abandoned town on the south-eastern tip of Pamban Island. It is also known as the last land of India. It is located about 24 kilometres (15 mi) west of Talaimannar and Dhanushkodi in Srilanka. The town was destroyed by a cyclone in 1964, turning it into a ghost town. The ruins of the temple, railway station, and water tank that once stood in the bustling town still stand as reminders. Seeing these recreates the horror of that day in our minds. Although uninhabited, it has become a popular tourist destination due to its historical and mythological significance. According to legend, Ram Sethu is a bridge built by the monkey army when lord Rama asked hanuman to build a bridge to take his army to Lanka, where Ravana had imprisoned Sita. Until 1964, Dhanushkodi was connected to the Indian mainland by a metre gauge railway (Mandapam). One of the ways to reach Dhanushkodi town was by the boat mail express train from Egmore, Chennai to Dhanushkodi. The 1964 cyclone engulfed the entire town, claiming the lives of about 1,800 people, including those who had travelled by train, and turning it into a ghost town. Dhanushkodi was declared a place where life was impossible by the government (hence the place is known as a ghost town). It can be reached by travelling 15 km along a beach road surrounded by two seas. Despite the high tides, strong winds and the threat of cyclones, the number of tourists visiting the area is increasing day by day due to the beauty of the area, historical importance and unique features of the place. Dhanushkodi is a place where one can experience adventure and excitement. This place is an experience.

Ramar path is also known as Gandhamadhana Parvatham. It is believed that lord Rama is watching over Srilanka from this place. Ramar path has the footprint of lord Rama and is a holy place for Hindus. It is a 2-storeyed temple on a hilltop. It is easily accessible by a ladder.

This temple is the most historically important and sacred structure in the city according to Hindu belief. This Hindu temple, located in the central part of the city, is dedicated to lord Shiva. This temple is one of the four most sacred divine places (Hindu char dham) along with Badrinath, Puri, Dwarka and Rameswaram. This temple is one of the 12 jyotirlinga temples. The longest corridor in the world is located in this temple. The temple houses a gigantic Nandi idol, 22 feet long, 17 feet wide, and 17 feet high, made of limestone and brick. It is noteworthy that the idol here bears the same name as the idol in the famous Kashi Vishwanath Swamy Temple. There are 64 holy tirthas in and around Rameswaram. Out of these, 22 tirthas are important and 14 of them are in the form of wells and tanks within the temple premises. Bathing in these tirthas is of great importance in the pilgrimage of Rameswaram. This is considered equivalent to penance. There are 22 tanks inside the temple. The most important of these is the agnitheertha. It is believed that a Hindu’s journey is not complete without making a pilgrimage to Varanasi and Rameswaram, which in itself explains the importance of visiting Rameswaram.

Witness the sunrise and sunset over the ocean

Amid the soothing sea breeze and dancing waves is Vivekananda rock situated. The rocks are surrounded by the locative sea where the three oceans Bay of Bengal, the Indian oceans and the Arabian Sea meets. This memorial located in a rock in the sea, about 500 meters from the main land. It is tribute to India’s greatest monk who took this lands spiritual brilliance to the world.
It is believed that swami Vivekananda, swam across the seashore in Kanyakumari, Tamilnadu to reach the rock mid-sea and he meditated for three days and nights on the rock until he is said to have attained enlightenment there a basis for Kanyakumari resolve of 1892.
The legends also say it was on this rock that goddess Kanyakumari prayed to lord Shiva, thus attaining an important place in India’s religious premises. There is a specially preserved portion in the rock which is believed to be the imprint of the goddess’s feet.

Thiruvalluar was a celebrated Tamil poet and scholar and is best known as the author of ‘Tirukkural’, a collection of couplets on matters like ethics, politics, economics and love. Tirukkural is considered one of the greatest works in Tamil literature. The height of the statue and the pedestal combined is 133 feet (41 metres). It denotes the 133 chapters of the Tirukkural. The sculpture of Thiruvalluar is 95 feet (29 metres) and it stands on a 38 feet (12 metres) pedestal that represents the 38 chapters of virtue, the first of three books of the Kural text. The statue weighs 7000 tonnes in total.

Also known as "Dakshina Kailash". The 111.2 feet tall Shiva lingam is listed in the India Book of Records as the tallest Shiva lingam in the world. The temple is built in the Kerala style of architecture. It is built using water from Kashi, sand from Gangotri and soil from Rishikesh. There are 8 floors inside this structure. In addition to 108 different Shiva lingams, devotees can also see 64 forms of Lord Shiva in the temple for abhisheka.

Poovar Island is located near the confluence of the Neyyar River and the Arabian Sea. The specialty of Poovar Island is that you can see the Neyyar River, Poovar Lake, and the Arabian Sea together. It is also a coastal village. The specialty of Poovar is the golden sandy beach. It is a quiet and beautiful beach. It is also a favourite destination for local tourists. Boat trips through the Poovar Lake, Neyyar River, and mangrove forests are popular among tourists. It is also a habitat for various species of flora and fauna and is also a home to various species of birds. Poovar (Pozhikkara) is a wonderful place. A sandbar separates the Neyyar River and the sea. During the monsoon, the Neyyar River crosses the sandbar and meets the sea.

This is a Hindu temple located on the coast of the Arabian sea near Vizhinjam dedicated to Shiva, the temple is known for the 18 Mtr (58 feet) tall Gangadhareshwara sculpture, which is the tallest Shiva sculpture in kerala. ‘Aazhi’ means ‘sea’, and ‘mala’ means ‘hill’ in Malayalam. It rests on the right of the Arabian Sea on a slightly raised platform.

This historical temple is a blend of kerala and Dravidian styles of architecture. The principle diety of the temple is lord Vishnu. The idol is in the Ananthashayanam posture on his serpant Adisheshan.
The padmanabha Swamy temple in kerala is considered the richest temple in the world. It is known for its massive hidden vaults containing gold, jewels and valuable art facts. The idol of the presiding diety is noted for its composition which has 12008 Salagramam’s which were brought from Nepal. This temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams. The temple is situated facing east. Padmatheerthakulam is located to the north-east. The shrine is rectangular in shape. The 18-foot-tall Bhagavad idol made of 12008 Salagramas is enshrined. The temple Gopura is built on the Thanjavur model with a height of about 100 feet and 7 floors. The biggest feature of the temple is the Shivalipura and the Ottakal Mandapam, which are 400 feet long and 200 feet wide and are made of 365 single-stone pillars.

Kuthiramalika “mansion of horses” is a Travancore kingdom palace built by Swathy Thirunal Rama Varma on the south eastern side of Padmanabha Swamy temple. “Mansion of horses” and it has been named so because of the 122 horses that adorn the many pillars that support the southern roof of this magestic structure. Built in the 1840’s, Kuthiramalika is an example of traditional kerala architecture.

Pazhavangadi Ganapathy temple is a famous Hindu temple known for its idols, architecture and cultural significance: idols. The temple houses several idols, including a unique Ganesha idol made of gold and precious stones, and another Ganesha idol made of pure granite architecture. The temple is a blend of Dravidian and Dakshina architecture. The walls and pillars of the temple are notable for their carvings. A popular offering at the temple is to break a coconut at a specific spot. It is believed that this helps devotees overcome obstacles and fulfil their wishes. Devotees pray at this temple before journeys and when starting any endeavour in life and break a coconut as an offering as a sign of faith to remove obstacles.

Millions of women gather every year in the month of kumbham around this temple and prepare Pongala (rice cooked with jaggery, ghee, coconut as well as other ingredients) in the open in small pots to please the goddesses Kannaki. Pongala (literally means to boil over) is a ritualistic offering of a sweet dish, consisting of rice porridge, sweet brown molasses, coconut gratings, nut and raisins. It is done as an offering to the presiding deity of the temple. The goddess popularly known as Attukal amma. Goddess Attukal Devi is believed to fulfil their wishes and provide properity.The Pongala festival has made it the Guinness book of world. Records for the largest congregation of women at any single place. Popularly known as “sabarimala of women”.

The Thiruvallam Sree Parasurama Swamy temple is one of the oldest temples in kerala. It is the only temple dedicated to Parasurama. It is located on the banks of the Karamana River. The head of padmanabha Swamy is kept in this temple, the feet in the Tripadapuram Mahadeva temple, and the body in the Sree padmanabha Swamy temple. Legend has it that kerala was created by the throwing of an axe by Parasurama maharishi. The archaeological department considers this temple as a protected monument. Bali tharpanam or shraddham (offering obeisance’s to ancestors) is an important ritual in which devotees bathe in holy water and worship the spirits of their ancestors.
