  Fort Kochi is rich in culture and heritage. It is also a major tourist destination for both domestic and foreign tourists. It consists of a main land and several islands. It is also known as west Kochi or old Kochi. The name Kochi is believed to have originated from the Malayalam word Kochu Azhi, meaning 'small lake'. Fort Kochi is a remnant of several conquests. The Portuguese built the St. Francis church as a catholic church. This church, which is one of the national monuments, was once the tomb of Vasco Da Gama. Kochi continues to be a major centre for the export of spices. Spices such as pepper and cardamom, as well as traditional kerala handicrafts and coir products can be purchased in Kochi.   Mattancherry Palace is also known as the Dutch Palace. Built by the Portuguese and renovated by the Dutch, this palace is an important historical monument in Kochi. This palace was the residence of the kings of Kochi. One of the specialties here is the traditional Kerala floor construction method. (The floor is made of black stone, burnt charcoal, stone, ash and egg white). Beautiful Kerala murals (based on the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Kumarasambhava) are displayed here. In addition, portraits of the kings of Kochi, crowns and swords can also be seen here.

• St. Francis church

  This is the oldest church built by Europeans in India. This church, built of earth and wood, is located in the middle of a fort built by the Portuguese. It is also a church that has witnessed many invasions. The church is under the administration and protection of the CSI church. The high roof made of wood is covered with architectural tiles. The beauty and grandeur of antiquity are evident in all the construction methods of the church. A mausoleum is located in the middle of the lawn, built in 1920 in memory of the people of Kochi who sacrificed their lives in the First World War. Vasco da Gama died in 1524 during his third visit to Kochi. He was buried in this church. After 14 years, his body was taken to Portugal. His burial place inside the church is clearly marked, and these features alone make this a church that attracts the attention of history students, tourists, and believers.

• Paradesi Jewish Synagogue Mattancherry

  The mattancherry synagogue, also known as the Paradesi synagogue, is the oldest synagogue in the commonwealth. It is a fine example of historical craftsmanship, excellent material knowledge, and a diverse cultural heritage. It was built in 1568. It is located in the valley of old Kochi, known as the Jewish city. The mattancherry palace temple and the synagogue share a border. Famed for its hand-painted Chinese tiles and antique chandeliers. The synagogue's 400th anniversary was celebrated in 1968 with a ceremony attended by the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The Paradesi synagogue has separate seating for men and women. As a historical structure, entry is by ticket. As of April 2016, only 5 Jews live in fort Kochi. It is run by john Jacob, one of the oldest Jews in kerala, who lives in Thiruvalla. Please note, the synagogue remains closed on Fridays, Saturdays, and Jewish holidays.

• Jew town

  Fort Kochi is a historic area known for its Jewish heritage. Shops line both sides of the Jewish street. Antiques, curiosities, carved furniture, sculptures, remains of traditional houses, and jewellery are all available for purchase. The Jewish city, also known as the Jewish street, is located between the mattancherry palace and the Paradesi synagogue. The three main communities of Jews in India are the Cochinis, the Bene Israel, and the Baghdadis. Only 14 Malabar Jews and one Paradesi Jew remain in kerala today.

• Marine drive

  It is a confluence of a beautiful backwater, a port, and a bustling city. Marine drive or APJ Abdul Kalam Marg is a 3-km-long walkway along the backwaters. It was built taking inspiration from the marine drive in Mumbai. • Vivekananda rock

  Amid the soothing sea breeze and dancing waves is Vivekananda rock situated. The rocks are surrounded by the locative sea where the three oceans Bay of Bengal, the Indian oceans and the Arabian Sea meets. This memorial located in a rock in the sea, about 500 meters from the main land. It is tribute to India’s greatest monk who took this lands spiritual brilliance to the world.
  It is believed that swami Vivekananda, swam across the seashore in Kanyakumari, Tamilnadu to reach the rock mid-sea and he meditated for three days and nights on the rock until he is said to have attained enlightenment there a basis for Kanyakumari resolve of 1892.
  The legends also say it was on this rock that goddess Kanyakumari prayed to lord Shiva, thus attaining an important place in India’s religious premises. There is a specially preserved portion in the rock which is believed to be the imprint of the goddess’s feet.

• Thiruvalluvar statue

  The majesty of the Thiruvalluvar statue that can be seen from a long distance. It stands tall at 41 metres, with the deep blue sky and resplendent sea in the backdrop. Located on a rock, right next to the Vivekananda memorial in Kanyakumari, the breathtaking statue of Thiruvalluar.
  Thiruvalluar was a celebrated Tamil poet and scholar and is best known as the author of ‘Tirukkural’, a collection of couplets on matters like ethics, politics, economics and love. Tirukkural is considered one of the greatest works in Tamil literature. The height of the statue and the pedestal combined is 133 feet (41 metres). It denotes the 133 chapters of the Tirukkural. The sculpture of Thiruvalluar is 95 feet (29 metres) and it stands on a 38 feet (12 metres) pedestal that represents the 38 chapters of virtue, the first of three books of the Kural text. The statue weighs 7000 tonnes in total.

• Mahatma Gandhi memorial

  The Gandhi memorial Nestless in a tranquil setting with the sea providing the perfect backdrop. Also known as Gandhi Mandapam. Mahatma Gandhi had visited Kanyakumari two times during the period when he travelled all over the country delivering messages of freedom and inspiring people to join the independence movement.
  Following his death in 1948, Gandhi’s ashes were kept in 12 different urns and transported to various parts of India for immersion. One of the urns was brought to Kanyakumari and the memorial is built right on the spot where that win was kept.
  The building has a ceiling with an opening that has been built in such a way that on every Oct 2nd, which is the date of his birth anniversary, sun rays will fall on the same spot where the urn was kept.

  The Maheshwaram Sree Sivaparvathi Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is a Hindu temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, which houses the tallest Shiva lingam in the world. Also known as "Dakshina Kailash". The 111.2 feet tall Shiva lingam is listed in the India Book of Records as the tallest Shiva lingam in the world. The temple is built in the Kerala style of architecture. It is built using water from Kashi, sand from Gangotri and soil from Rishikesh. There are 8 floors inside this structure. In addition to 108 different Shiva lingams, devotees can also see 64 forms of Lord Shiva in the temple for Abhisheka.

• Aazhimala Shiva Temple

  This is a Hindu temple located on the coast of the Arabian sea near Vizhinjam dedicated to Shiva, the temple is known for the 18 Mtr (58 feet) tall Gangadhareshwara sculpture, which is the tallest Shiva sculpture in kerala. ‘Aazhi’ means ‘sea’, and ‘mala’ means ‘hill’ in Malayalam. It rests on the right of the Arabian Sea on a slightly raised platform.

• Sri padmanabha Swamy temple

  This historical temple is a blend of kerala and Dravidian styles of architecture. The principle diety of the temple is lord Vishnu. The idol is in the Ananthashayanam posture on his serpant Adisheshan.
  The padmanabha Swamy temple in kerala is considered the richest temple in the world. It is known for its massive hidden vaults containing gold, jewels and valuable art facts. The idol of the presiding diety is noted for its composition which has 12008 Salagramam’s which were brought from Nepal. This temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams. The temple is situated facing east. Padmatheerthakulam is located to the north-east. The shrine is rectangular in shape. The 18-foot-tall Bhagavad idol made of 12008 Salagramas is enshrined. The temple Gopura is built on the Thanjavur model with a height of about 100 feet and 7 floors. The biggest feature of the temple is the Shivalipura and the Ottakal Mandapam, which are 400 feet long and 200 feet wide and are made of 365 single-stone pillars.

• Pazhavangadi Ganapathy temple

  Pazhavangadi Ganapathy temple is a famous Hindu temple known for its idols, architecture and cultural significance: idols. The temple houses several idols, including a unique Ganesha idol made of gold and precious stones, and another Ganesha idol made of pure granite architecture. The temple is a blend of Dravidian and Dakshina architecture. The walls and pillars of the temple are notable for their carvings.

• Zoo (Monday closed)

  One of the oldest zoos of the India spread over 30 acres of land and located in the temple city Thiruvananthapuram. Considered to be the oldest of its kind in Asia. Currently, the zoo is home to 1025 different animals. From 98 species. Recently the Srilankan Dehiwala zoo gifted anaconda snakes which are now one of the biggest hightlights of the zoological park. Apart from the fauna there are more than 100 different plant species in the park.

  Kuthiramalika “Mansion of Horses” is a Travancore kingdom palace built by Swathy Thirunal Rama Varma on the south eastern side of Padmanabha Swamy temple. “Mansion of horses” and it has been named so because of the 122 horses that adorn the many pillars that support the southern roof of this magestic structure. Built in the 1840’s, Kuthiramalika is an example of traditional kerala architecture.
